Millions of children enter online games every day to play, compete and connect. But the person behind the headset isn't always another child.
Gaming has changed.
What was once primarily an entertainment experience has become a highly social environment—complete with text messaging, voice chat, private conversations, virtual communities and relationships that can move beyond the game itself. For children, that connectivity creates enormous opportunities for friendship and play.
It also creates a safety problem that traditional parental controls were never designed to solve.
According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, its CyberTipline received 1.4 million reports concerning online enticement in 2025—a 158% increase from the previous year. Online enticement can include grooming, sexual conversations, sextortion and attempts to move an online relationship toward an in-person encounter. NCMEC specifically identifies online gaming, along with social media and messaging applications, among the environments where this victimization occurs.
Recent research from Thorn provides another perspective. In its latest survey of more than 1,000 U.S. children ages 9–17, one in four minors reported having experienced an online sexual interaction. One in six children ages 9–12 reported such an experience. Twenty-two percent of surveyed minors reported an online sexual interaction with someone they believed to be an adult.
Those numbers raise a bigger question:
Can online safety recognize danger before an interaction becomes an incident?
Today's platforms and parental-safety technologies are increasingly sophisticated. AI-powered moderation, parental alerts, content filtering, age controls, suspicious-behavior detection and reporting systems are already helping identify harmful activity and protect young users.
But grooming presents a particularly difficult challenge because danger does not always announce itself in a single message. A conversation may begin innocently. Trust can develop gradually. Language can change over time. Communication may move from a public game to private messaging. Questions can become increasingly personal. Seemingly harmless interactions can form a concerning pattern only when viewed together.
A child may not recognize that progression. And a traditional safety system examining individual events may not always recognize the larger pattern either.
The next frontier is not simply detecting harmful content. It is recognizing when seemingly ordinary signals begin to form a pattern of emerging risk.
The Next Generation of Online Safety
Most digital safety systems are designed to react to known violations: prohibited words, reported users, blocked content or actions taken after something concerning has already occurred.
But intelligent safety creates another possibility.
What if technology could recognize patterns of escalating risk rather than waiting for a single prohibited event? Changes in conversation patterns. Attempts to move communication elsewhere. Increasing secrecy. Repeated boundary testing. Age-inappropriate interactions. Behavioral changes occurring across time.
Individually, a signal may mean very little.
Together, they can tell a story.
That is where the next generation of digital safety becomes particularly important.
The objective isn't simply to monitor more. It's to understand sooner. And in an online world where children can interact with strangers in seconds, the difference between detecting an event and recognizing a developing pattern could become one of the most important advances in digital safety.
Safety shouldn't begin only after a child realizes something is wrong.
